What is Mild Steel rebar?
Mild Steel Rebar, short for “reinforcing bar” or “reinforcement bar”, is a metal bar that is used to help increase the tensile strength of concrete. As a result, it helps concrete structures withstand tensile, bending, torsion, and shearing loads. Since these are areas of weakness for concrete, rebar strengthens concrete structures that would otherwise fall apart under these forces.
Mild Steel Rebar is not typically visible in concrete structures because it is usually buried within the concrete structure. It is almost always made of steel because steel has thermal expansion properties like concrete which reduces temperature change issues. Rebar is usually not smooth, it is made with ribs to prevent slippage within the concrete structure.
How is rebar made?
Mild Steel Rebar is almost always made from steel, which has excellent tensile properties relative to concrete. Interestingly, it is commonly made from recycled steel such as old cars, appliances, and machinery that are melted down with electric arc furnaces, cooled in the form of billets, and then stored. Once the billets are ready to be used for making rebar, they are reheated to an elevated temperature (but below their melting temperature) and are fed rapidly through a series of extrusion tools. The different stages of extrusion tooling continue to neck down the steel billet into smaller and smaller diameter rods until the desired rebar diameter is achieved. A set of tooling creates the deformations needed to prevent slippage within the concrete. The rebar is then sheared to the desired length.
How does rebar work?
The tensile strength of the steel rebar complements the compressive strength of concrete to create structures that have a blend of both types of strength. This reduces the risk of fractures and allows the structure to better withstand movements and forces that might otherwise cause a concrete structure to fail.
Mild Steel Rebar is often laid in a grid pattern. This means that different segments of rebar are placed parallel and perpendicular to one another so that it can withstand tensile forces from many directions. The deformations on the exterior of the rebar ensure that the rebar does not slip out of the concrete structure. European Rebar
European rebar is made of manganese, which makes them bend easily. They’re not suitable for use in areas that are prone to extreme weather conditions or geological effects, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or tornadoes. The cost of this rebar is low.
Carbon Steel Rebar
As the name represents, it is made up of carbon steel and is commonly known as Black Bar due to carbon colour. The main drawback of this rebar is that it corrodes, which adversely effect the concrete and structure. The tensile strength ratio coupled with the value makes black rebar one of the best choices.
Epoxy-Coated Rebar
Epoxy-coated rebar is black rebar with an epoxy coat. It has the same tensile strength, but is 70 to 1,700 times more resistant to corrosion. However, the epoxy coating is incredibly delicate. The greater the damage to the coating, the less resistant to corrosion.
Galvanized Rebar
Galvanized rebar is only forty times more resistant to corrosion than black rebar, but it is more difficult to damage the coating of galvanized rebar. In that respect, it has more value than epoxy-coated rebar. However, it is about 40% more expensive than epoxy-coated rebar.
Glass-Fiber-Reinforced-Polymer (GFRP)
GFRP is made up of carbon fibre. As it is made up of fibre, bending is not allowed. It is very resistant to corrosion and is costly when compared to other rebars.
Stainless Steel Rebar
Stainless steel rebar is the most expensive reinforcing bar available, about eight times the price of epoxy-coated rebar. It is also the best rebar available for most projects. However, using stainless steel in all but the most unique of circumstances is often overkill. But, for those who have a reason to use it, stainless steel rebar 1,500 times more resistant to corrosion than black bar; it is more resistant to damage than any of the other corrosive-resistant or corrosive-proof types or rebar; and it can be bent in the field.
