Aluminum Angle 6061

The Aluminum Angle 6061 is a product that is used widely because of its high resistance to corrosion. In fact, it is considered as being the heat-treated aluminum with the highest resistance to corrosion. It has been alloyed with magnesium and silicon. This alloy has a variety of mechanical properties that enable it to be formed and machined easily. It also has great weldability and joining characteristics. Aluminum Angle 6061 can be anodized or have other coatings applied.

It’s common for this grade of aluminum to be used for structural components, base plates, machine parts, valves parts, worm gears, fasteners, marine components, truck components, brackets and electrical fittings and connectors. When an alloy is needed for heavy duty structure, this grade of aluminum is a good pick because it has good strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to corrosion. Cold working can be easily performed on this metal, when it is in the annealed condition. Other methods that can be used to form this metal include drilling, bending, tapping, stamping, deep drawing and cutting.

The machinability rating of Aluminum Angle 6061 is 90 percent. It machines to a high finish. Forging can also be used at temperatures between 750- and 900-degrees F. Heat treatment can be used at temperatures between 500 and 700 degrees F. All common welding methods can be used for welding this metal. When heat treating, it’s best to use 990 degrees F for a sufficient amount of time to allow thorough heating, then quench with water. Precipitation hardening is possible at 320 degrees F for 18 hours, then air cool, then another eight hours at 350 degrees F, following by air cooling.

 

Aluminum Angle 6063

The Aluminum Angle 6063 is an alloy that is particularly used for commercial applications. Some of the characteristics that make it a popular choice are its strength, cost effectiveness, resistance to corrosion, excellent weldability, great formability and extrudability. Its finishing characteristics are also desirable for the applications that it is used for. The Aluminum Angle 6063  can also be easily anodized for color matching with alloys like 5052 and 3003, along with improving its corrosion resistance. The aluminum angle is typically used for architectural purposes – it has sharp corners on the inside and outside.

The tensile strength of Aluminum Angle 6063 is 27,000 psi, yield strength is 21,000 psi and shear strength is 17,000 psi. The 6063 aluminum angle is mainly used in applications for molding and trim within architectures, door construction, windows, furniture and similar items. The machinability rating of 6063 aluminum that is in T4 and T6 condition is 80 percent compared to 2011 at 100 percent. Welding can be easily performed on this grade of alloy, using common techniques for welding.

When using the annealing process for this aluminum, it is recommended that 775 degrees F be used. The metal should be continuously serviced at this temperature for between two and three hours, then the temperature should be lowered by 50 degrees F every hour until 500 degrees F is reached. Solution heat treatment can be performed at 970 degrees F and aging precipitation heat treatment can be performed at 350 degrees F. With aging precipitation, the metal should be placed in 350 degrees F for eight hours.
